Am I crazy for really liking the Mini Clubman? (Not current generation obvi)

I love the brown, the mini-wagon, the manual, the zip.

Would this be a terrible daily? I would only worry about the reliability.

Anywho, maybe I’m crazy, but jeez  that’s a good looking car.

They are not very reliable.

Sony1492 is not having much luck with his.

Roomy for the size, high MPG, and they’re cheap.

2nd-gen Minis are known to be mechanical nightmares (the engine is apparently a flaming pile of shit). The 1st-gens apparently aren’t that bad, but the Clubman bodystyle didn’t exist at that time.

2nd gens have a bad rep for reliability. As someone else commented, sony has been having a bad time with his.

Get a 1st gen S if you are ok with the smaller dimensions.

I think after 2011 or so is supposed to be better reliability wise, but it’s still a mini. If you’re serious I’d really di ve into some owner forums.

Yeah I think you’re crazy.

It’s a great package and great chassis let down by BMW’s terrible corner cutting and lack of reliability.

I test drove one 6 years ago and loved it, then read the internet. Scary stuff.

I love these things and am seriously considering buying one this summer. They come in all kinds of fun colors, are really zippy, and supposed to be ok to work on yourself. A comprehensive service would do a lot to increase the DDability of it.

Also, is a Clubman S a shooting brake?

I loved mine. My 2013 MCS has been very reliable at 90k, so I think they finally got most of the bugs out of those engines by 2012 or so.

Whatever you do do not buy a 2007-2011. The N14 engine used in the early 2nd gens is a shit fueled dumpster fire. The N18 in the 2012+ is a much better engine but still has some issues.

Follow these instructions. You can trust me because I work on German cars for a living. Buy mini. Go to your bank. Withdraw all of your money. Go camping way out in the middle nowhere . Use your money as tinder/firewood. Try to go home, but the car is now broken. And you have no cell reception . You are now destined to become a crazy old recluse living off the land. All because you wanted to drive a steaming pile of poop.

I love them too, but their reputation is less than stellar. This blue JCW is for sale in Minnesota sand I want it really bad. But going into debt to get an older, less reliable, fwd BMW seems like an absolutely terrible idea.

For each of my last two car searches I went in thinking a Mini would be a good choice; both times I test drove one and both times I was let down by how they seemed to be twice as old on the inside as their age and mileage would suggest. I think post 2011s are better in terms of reliability but the quality still seems a little lacking. Just my limited experience.

Ive always wanted an R55 Clubman, but I am fully aware that they are a total nightmare as they age. Think BMW’s usual shitty reliability and durability, but in a car that was inexpensive when new and owned by several people who skimped on upkeep, and with a cramped FWD package that requires partial disassembly for even basic repairs.

Step 1: extended warranty the covers everything. You will need it.

Step 2: buy Mini.

Step 3: enjoy.

I took a loss on my R56 Mini when I traded it in. I owned for 2 years and 13000 miles. I normally drive, a lot. Ive had my Xterra for a uear.and driven it 22000 miles, for comparison. The Mini s pent a lot of time in the dealer. No way was I keeping that car outside of warranty. I liked it. Not as much as the R53 though.
